I found all this about the RS97 while looking for a retro gameboythingy on Amazon last weekend. I decided on the RS97 and will get mine tomorrow.
Googling the topic, I found some Revo K101s that were white with colored buttons, and I think it looks awesome compared to the translucent black.
I couldn't find anywhere though where I could buy replacement parts. If anybody knows, please post here.
An alternative would be to spray paint. Any ideas on which paints would work on plastics and be durable for handheld use?
Thanks.
what the best firmware for Powkiddy Q80 and what site for download best and latest firmware?
I am glad to read this wonderful article.
Thanks for the nice comment. Not sure why, but wanted it to look similar to my first Gameboy. I must say, it got me hooked. So I ordered a 2ds XL yesterday. Getting older, I think I´ll benefit from the larger screen. And I read that you´re supposed to have all the access to old classics, too. So sounds great to me. As stated, I´m not the youngest any more, so I have the money to actually buy games, so I do. ....Memories. Back as a kid, it was a handful of games as they would have to be paid by mom and dad.....
Looks awesome! Love the choice of colors!
After it took me a while to actually go out and get me some spray cans, I finally made it.
Some things I encountered:
- using primer is good, but make sure you don´t get a clear one. I didn´t see where I had sprayed and got some runs of primer. Wiping away showed that the black rim parts are a different material that got affected by the primer.
- Getting some nice even coating, I sprayed about 3-4 times. In return, I had paint build up in the button holes and on the buttons. So the buttons got stuck and I had to sand down the holes (works perfectly now again).
- Overall, tolerances and fitting of the parts are very tight. If you try painting your unit, I would advise to tape all areas where you don´t want to have paint. Assembling the rim parts was a pita. I also had to sand down the outside of the battery lid.
Other than that, I think the result was worth the effort, althoug I have seen a unit on the dingoonity forums that was painted from the inside which I really liked. Already thinking about getting a 2nd unit.
So here are the results:
I have later also added the original label again, so the last picture was taken before doing that.
The label is plasticky on the surface, but underneath it´s paper. No big deal, but hard to peel off in one piece.
Who knows. If mine turns out like I envision, I just may do that ;-) But only on special requests...
You should do custom paint jobs for others lol $$$
Good job, John. Looks great. I think I may stop by at my local Home improvement store to see what colors they have. I´m still going for something like a Nintendo style. Not sure though if I go with the colors I found for the revo concept or the classic Gameboy with all red buttons.
@Retrogamers97: I would have loved to contact the mod, but as I cannot access the forum yet, I don´t get see his profile. So I cannot pm him and I don´t know his email. Bummer.
Thats pretty cool i quite like it good job john.
So this is how mine turned out. Nothing fancy, just wanted to see if it was possible. I am going to give it a couple of days before I start carrying it around with me at work, to see if it will "cure" anymore. I had painted some xbox controllers back in the day and the paint seemed to get more hard and scratch resistant over time. My concern was that 4 layers would be too much and would interfere with buttons and d-pad, but it did not. I ended up putting 4-40 lock washer in-between the plastic abxy buttons and the membrane to fix the rattle that they had.

Yeah, good preparation is everything. I read that, too. I was planning on not sanding mine too much (as to leave the original structure, I think it looks similar to my old Gameboy), but I thought about priming. I stumbled over that blog showing a cool GBA mod, and they had 2 tamiya colors to choose from, one for PC and one for ABS. I had my unit open over the weekend to replace my 8GB class 4 with a 32GB class 10 card, but none of the plastic parts shows what material was used. Bummer. But I´m really curious about yours once it´s done.
I was registering on the dingoonity boards, but that´s already 3 days since and I never received an answer nor was I admitted so far. And my Spam inbox doesn´t show anything. Any ideas?
Will do! It won't be anything of any show quality, but just wanted to do it:)
Great be nice to see some pics of it when its done i can post on the website under mods section thanks.
I actually just started painting mine. I went with Rust-oleum Painter's Touch. The folks at Home Depot, Lowe's, and the local paint supply shop all agreed on it. When I had gone to Home Depot, the sales rep from Rust-oleum was there inspecting their setup. He was the one that originally got me on this path. But the main thing he "couldn't stress enough" was proper prep of the surface. He suggested using a fine Scotch-Brite sanding pad. I ended up going with 3m green to start with and finished with 3m gray. I am planning on doing 2 coats of red and 2 coats of clear.
I am not sure about this but i have contacted the makers of the k101pro and ask them if they can make some cases for the rs-97 since they are the same so lets see.
